Portland Family Photography

Happy people take the best photographs. Happy parents with happy kids cooperating and having a great time take phenomenal family photographs. That’s my job. It’s a little bit like stand-up comedy with a camera. It’s my thing. But enough about me. I think you get that I want to be your family photographer. Face it, folks, those kids are not going to stay that little, that cute, or even that willing to have their photographs taken forever. So why wait?

Family Photo Session FAQs

What is the best place in Portland for family photography?

There is no single answer to this question. Depending on the time of year there might be cherry blossoms on the waterfront, brilliant colors in the Portland Rose Garden or fabulous fall colors throughout the city. All year long there are great architectural wonders like the St Johns Bridge or Multnomah Falls Lodge. I have a really cool Pacific NW Vibe indoor and outdoor studio as well.

How long do kids usually last for family photos?

This is kind of my thing. I just have a way of engaging little people so that they will think that getting their photos taken is the best thing ever. Having said that, the hardest ages are 2-5 and they usually can last through a half session ( 40 minutes ) with a little bit of entertainment and engagement, which I provide.

What is the best time of day for family photography?

First of all note that you have two major options - indoor studio lighting or outdoor natural lighting. I have a private indoor studio for a more formal looking family portrait with lots and lots of backdrops throughout our 1908 Portland Classic Craftsman building that has been fully restored with period woodwork, clear vertical grain fir hardwood floors and period lighting. Indoor photography can be done at any time. Outdoor natural lighting is best in the morning and in the evening, in the 2 hours or so after sunrise or before sunset. However, if it is overcast, excellent lighting can be had all day long.

What should we wear for our family photos?

I always say to my clients… you just need to be you! I have had clients arrive dressed for the opera, the rodeo and in total matching outfits. I am happy to help get you in wardrobe, so lets talk. Generally best colors to compliment skin tone and most hair colors are navy blue, dark grey, burgundy, dark purple, deep green and dark brown. Shirts for men are best in light blue and light grey. Yellows, really bright colors, and small highly repeated patterns are generally less attractive in photos.

Family Photos = Art

I believe that family photographs, if done well, can be as interesting and engaging as any form of visual art. It is my hope that your home can be your art gallery. Why settle for selfies and smart phone snaps when your family photos can be a work of art? I can produce your family photos for digital presentation, social media, large format prints, or high quality albums. I can even build you a custom holiday card or announcement.
